    It's a cover painting by Bob Larkin, dated 1977. Here's his Wikipedia entry. He, um, he signed it. It's right there on the image you posted.

      yeah man. I had to look at it for a while. Luckily, I was already familiar with Larkin as a fan of his Marvel magazine covers from my childhood, so it clicked eventually. Now we know what the sig looks like, I'll bet we see it popping up everywhere.
